Weather Underground Forecast for Wednesday, May 23, 2012.

The Nation will continue to see relatively stagnant weather on Wednesday as afternoon thunderstorms develop in the East and the Northwest continues to see cool, wet weather.

The Northeast will see another day of afternoon showers and thunderstorms as the disorganized frontal boundaries that have been lingering around for the last few days continue their snails pace drift eastward. Thunderstorms are anticipated from the Carolinas through coastal Maine, with the bulk of precipitation expected in the southern Appalachians.

Further south, wet weather should end on Wednesday, with clear skies building into the Gulf Coast states.

Clear skies are also anticipated throughout the Plains, but the Northern Plains will see cloud cover move in as some rain approaches from the West. The precipitation will be most pronounced over the Dakotas in the morning, then into Minnesota by afternoon.

Further west Precipitation will increase a bit in coverage as moisture streams into the Northwest. Most of Washington, Oregon and Idaho will see Precipitation on Wednesday.

The nation’s biggest weather shift will come to Florida, where heavy rain will move into southern portions of the state as moisture associated with the remains of Tropical Storm Alberto rain themselves out across the western Atlantic.

... Todays National safe boating message is navigation in fog...

Chances are that at some time during the year when you are on the
water you will occasionally encounter reduced visibility in
fog... and you will need to know how to navigate through it safely.

Sea fog on the southern South Carolina and southeast Georgia coastal
waters is more common in the cooler months of the year... when air
over a warmer water surface is transported over colder water surface.
This results in cooling of the air and condensation occurs... causing
fog to form. At other times radiation fog will form over land areas
and will move over the nearby coastal waters... also impacting the
marine area with reduced visibilities.

Fog is considered dense when visibilities fall to 1/2 nm or less and
requires that a dense fog advisory. When visibilities are this low the
port of Charleston and the port of Savannah are closed to navigation.

Sea fog can form quickly and can catch boaters off guard. Depending
upon how low visibilities fall... boaters can easily become disoriented.
Learning to navigate through the fog... or avoiding it... is critical to
safe boating.

If you encounter fog... navigate at a much slower than normal speed.
Slowing down will help you to avoid collisions.

Turn on all your running lights... even in the daytime.

Listen for sounds of other boats that may be nearby. Listen for fog
horns and Bells from nearby buoys.

Monitor the vhf NOAA Weather Radio.

Be familiar with the proper fog signals.

If your vessel has radar... it can be used to help you locate dangers
that may be near you.

Use GPS or a navigation chart to help obtain a fix on your location. If
you are unable to get your bearings... make sure that you are in a safe
location and stay there until visibilities improve.

Have a Compass available... and know how to properly use it.
