This is the High Park Fire in Larimer County, Colorado on Day 2. The fire, first reported Saturday morning, June 9th, grew to 20,000 acres by late Sunday. More than 2,600 evacuation orders have been issued. View is looking west across Fort Collins toward the foothills above Horsetooth Reservoir.

Nature is not a travesty. Before we fought fires we let them burn. It's just nature supplying nutrients to the soil.

Since the High Park Fire started last week it has charred more than 55,000 acres and destroyed more than 180 homes, the largest loss of homes due to a single fire in Colorado history. Lightning was reported as the official cause. Even larger fires have raged throughout the West for millenia, and continue to do so, due to a combination of natural phenomena and, in some cases, human activities. Although these fires are part of a process of forest renewal, their power reaches far beyond their borders, and for those directly affected, they are a real tragedy.
